NW Steelheaders Denounce Meddling In ODFW Director Search

Milwaukie, Oregon—The Association of Northwest Steelheaders (ANWS) Publicly
Support Virgil Moore for ODFW Director. A news article in the Medford Mail Tribune
(June 15, 2006 “New head of ODFW remains undecided”, by Mark Freeman) raised serious
concerns about the appointment of the next Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife
Director. In the article, it is reported that a commercial fishing group has derailed a public
and transparent process and turned it into a political dog fight.

“After the hearing last week, we thought the candidates would be measured on their
credentials,” said NW Steelheader Co-President Norm Ritchie. “The gillnet lobby has
stooped to name calling rather than working together for what is best for Oregon’s fish and
wildlife.”

The NW Steelheaders believe Virgil Moore has the strongest background, vision and
ability to balance competing interests. “Virgil Moore has a track record of working well
with constituency groups and fair-mindedness,” said NW Steelheader Co-President Gary
Benson. “He also has the professionalism and character to be successful in leading
ODFW.”

Virgil Moore is the chief of Fisheries for the Idaho Department of Fish & Wildlife. He has
extensive experience with Columbia River fish management. In addition, he has led several
significant scientific studies and ably managed a large state department.
On June 2, 2006, Ritchie and Benson sent the attached letter to the ODFW commission in
support of Vigil Moore.

The Association of Northwest Steelheaders (ANWS) is a non-profit organization offering a
fun and interesting way to enhance and protect fisheries and their habitats for today and the
