The Columbia River
Compact agencies of Oregon and Washington met today to
review salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon stock status and
consider non-Indian and treaty Indian commercial fishing
options for the mainstem Columbia River and took the
following actions:
Non-Indian Fisheries
Commercial Mainstem Salmon Fishery

The following
modifications were made to the previously adopted ongoing
non-Indian commercial fishery. Modifications are in bold.

Area: |
Zones 3-5 upstream of the Kalama River. |
|
|
Kalama-A, Lewis-A, Sandy, and Washougal rivers
sanctuaries are in effect. |

Gear: |
8 inch minimum and 9 ¾ inch maximum mesh size
restrictions. |
|
Allowable Sales: |
Salmon and sturgeon. A maximum of fifteen green or
white sturgeon in the aggregate may be possessed or sold
by each participating vessel during each calendar week
(Sunday through Saturday) of the open fishing periods.
The fifteen sturgeon possession and sales limit includes
both mainstem and Select Area fisheries. |

Washington Reporting Rule: |
WDFW adopted a regulation requiring all Washington
wholesale buyers purchasing fish from the commercial
mainstem salmon fishery to send a report of their
landings to WDFW by 10:00 AM on the day after the
purchase date via either:

Treaty Indian Fisheries
Adopted a commercial fishing season as
follows:

6 AM Wednesday September 28 to 6 PM Friday September 30
(2½ days) |

Area: |
All of Zone 6. |

Sanctuaries: |
All standard dam and river mouth sanctuaries are in
effect. The closure at the mouth of Spring Creek
Hatchery is the smaller sanctuary within a radius of 150
feet of the Spring Creek Hatchery fishway. |

Gear: |
8” minimum mesh size restriction. |
|
Allowable Sales: |
Chinook, sockeye, coho, steelhead, walleye, carp, and
shad. Sturgeon may not be sold. Sturgeon between 4 and
5 feet in The Dalles and John Day pools may be kept for
subsistence use and sturgeon between 45-60 inches in the
Bonneville Pool may also be kept for subsistence use. |

The states of Oregon and
Washington conferred today and approved the following rule
change for the Columbia River mainstem sport fisheries:
Mainstem Sport Salmon
Fisheries
Effective 12:01 AM Saturday October 1,
retention of chinook salmon (adults and jacks) is prohibited
in the area from Buoy 10 upstream to the Tongue Point/Rocky
Point line and from Bonneville Dam upstream to McNary Dam.
Future Compact Hearings

A Compact hearing is scheduled
for 1:00 PM, Monday October 3, 2005 via teleconference to
discuss salmon stock status and consider additional
non-Indian commercial fishing seasons in the mainstem
Columbia River.
