Columbia River Fishery Notice

Compact Action Joint State Action

 

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife                            September 23, 2005

The Columbia River Compact agencies of Oregon and Washington met today to review salmon and sturgeon stock status and consider non-Indian commercial fishing options for the mainstem Columbia River and took the following actions:

 

Non-Indian Fisheries

Commercial Mainstem Salmon Fishery

·          Adopted non-Indian commercial salmon seasons as follows:

Season:

6 AM to 6 PM Monday September 26

(12 hrs)

 

6 AM to 6 PM Wednesday September 28

(12 hrs)

Area:

Zones 1-3 upstream to the Kalama River.

Sanctuaries:

Elokomin-A, Abernathy, Cowlitz, and Kalama-A and sanctuaries are in effect.

Gear:

6 inch maximum mesh size unslackened floater gillnet or 9 inch minimum to

9 ¾ inch maximum mesh size restriction.

Season:

8 PM Monday September 26

to

1 AM Tuesday September 27

(5 hrs)

 

8 PM Wednesday September 28

to

1 AM Thursday September 29

(5 hrs)

Area:

Zones 3-5 upstream of the Kalama River.

Sanctuaries:

Kalama-A, Lewis-A, Sandy, and Washougal rivers sanctuaries are in effect.

Gear:

8 inch minimum and 9 ¾ inch maximum mesh size restrictions.

           

·     The following Allowable Sales and Washington Reporting Rule apply to all non-Indian commercial salmon seasons adopted above:

Allowable Sales:

Salmon and sturgeon.  A maximum of fifteen green or white sturgeon in the aggregate may be possessed or sold by each participating vessel during each calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) of the open fishing periods.  The fifteen sturgeon possession and sales limit includes both mainstem and Select Area fisheries.

 

Washington Reporting Rule:

WDFW adopted a regulation requiring all Washington wholesale buyers purchasing fish from the commercial mainstem salmon fishery to send a report of their landings to WDFW by 10:00 AM on the day after the purchase date via either:  a)  FAX transmission to (360) 906-6776 or (360) 906-6777

b)    E-mail to crfishtickets@dfw.wa.gov

c)     Telephone to 1-866-791-1281

 

 

Future Compact Hearings

·       A Compact/Joint State hearing is scheduled for 3:00 PM, Tuesday September 27, 2005 via teleconference to discuss ongoing recreational and commercial fisheries, salmon stock status and consider Treaty-Indian and non- Indian commercial fishing seasons in the mainstem Columbia River.
